About the denominator

David Popper was born in Prague on 16th June 1843. He followed his studies at the Prague Conservatoire as a student of Julius Goltermann. As a young artist, he gave concerts with the accompaniment of Bülow. After a series of successful concert tours, he became the leading cellist for the Court Opera House in Vienna between 1868-73. He was a professor of cello and string quartet of the Budapest Academy of Music from autumn 1886 until his death in 1913. He founded a world famous string quartet with Hubay. As soloist and conductor of the orchestra of the Academy of Music he played an active role in the Hungarian musical life. Brahms dedicated his sonata to him and he introduced the piece of music together with the author in Budapest. His pedagogical works, character and saloon pieces, cello concerto and arrangements are recorded as the masterpieces of cello classics.
