KREBS, Johannes

The German cellist and pedagogue Johannes Krebs is one of the most versatile musicians of his generation.

He studied cello and chamber music  in Hannover, Madrid, Cologne and Basel with Frans Helmerson, Reinhard Latzko, Walter Levin and the Alban Berg Quartett,  and in masterclasses with Boris Pergamenschikow, Bernhard Greenhouse, Yehudi Menuhin and Mario Brunello. He won numerous prices at national and international competitions in Germany, Austria, England and the USA.

He served as assistant principal at the Hamburg State Opera from 2002-2006 and as 1st principal cellist at the Bremen Philharmonic from 2006-2019.

As soloist with orchestra he performed under famous conductors like Ingo Metzmacher, James Judd, Christopher Hogwood, Markus Poschner, Anja Bihlmaier, Sbra Dinic, Nicholas Milton, Wolfgang Schmidt or Florian Krumpöck. He has been enjoying an extensive chamber music career with his duo partner, acclaimed Ukrainian pianist Olena Miso, and during many years with the Piano Trio Hannover and the String Trio Lirico, their recordings for Audite and Genuin labels having been highly acclaimed internationally. 

Being in high demand as a teacher, he taught at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen from 2009-2020 and was appointed University Professor at the Kunstuniversität Graz/Austria in 2019. His students have won more than 30 orchestra auditions and various international competitions in Germany, Austria, Portugal, Italy and the USA. He regularly teaches in masterclasses in Austria, Spain and Switzerland and has taught as guest professor in Krakow, Gent, Ljubljana and Seoul. 

Since 2015 he is artistic director of the international chambermusic festival „Musikfest Goslar“.

Krebs plays on a marvelous instrument made by Carlo Antonio Testore, Milano 1746.
